A lot of people probably can’t understand why someone would voluntarily give up American citizenship — but if someone wanted to do that, they’d now incur financial penalties for it.Congress just passed a new law that will stop your capital — or at least a good portion of it — at the border, should you decide not to be a U.S. citizen anymore. Is it, perhaps, in preparation for the possibility that Americans might rebel at the debt and taxes incurred by their government by leaving for lower-tax locales? You probably didn’t notice this little provision inserted into the Heroes Act of 2008, passed by Congress on June 17. The headlines in the press release about the law were about the increased benefits for veterans and families of deceased military. But Richard Kohan of Price WaterhouseCoopers drew my attention to one section of the act, which states that anyone voluntarily giving up his or her citizenship will be taxed on all of his assets as if he or she had sold them — paying capital gains on assets that have increased in value, even though they have not been sold. That’s right. While everyone in the media is focused on keeping aliens out of America, Congress has voted to lock its citizens - or at least a good portion of their assets — into America! Maybe they’re thinking that patriotism won’t be enough to keep the smart money from recognizing the coming increases in the tax burden.Patriotism and DebtWe expect our elected leaders to be patriotic, to wear flap pins on their lapels? But how patriotic is it for our elected officials of both parties to drag our country into debt? This year the Federal budget deficit will be a record $400 billion. That astonishing number will be added to our existing $9 trillion national debt. It’s money that our government spends in excess of what it collects in taxes.[For an instant update on our National Debt go to the moving numbers at www.Truthin2008.org -- a nonpartisan watchdog group on the national debt.]Government officials say they’re shocked at the record number of American consumers who are filing for bankruptcy. Yet those same politicians are spending America into an effective bankruptcy — building a burden of current debt and promises of future debt that can never be repaid. Now, how patriotic is that?Patriotism and TaxesDo you consider it your patriotic duty to pay your taxes? Do you feel unpatriotic because you spend some time trying to figure out how to reduce your tax burden, by maximizing deductions whenever possible? If that’s not unpatriotic for you, is it unpatriotic for wealthy people, or corporations, to try to reduce their tax burden? Where do you draw the line? Perhaps it’s most unpatriotic for our elected officials to construct a tax system that doles out benefits to special interest groups, pitting one group of Americans against another. What’s really unpatriotic, in my opinion, is trying to divide Americans through the politics of envy. Our country has moved forward because of our optimism and our belief that any American can build a better financial future. It has been our nature to honor those who have been successful, and seek to emulate them, not to destroy them because they have more assets or income.Of course, that presupposes that the successful people accept their patriotic responsibility to give back to the society that made their success possible. And the facts show that Americans are the most charitable and generous people on the planet.Think of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, literally giving away their fortunes to help humanity. Or think of the people who filled sandbags along the Mississippi this month to save the homes of strangers. When a government encourages the best in its citizens, by its policies and its example, patriotic citizens rise to the occasion. And when a government burdens its citizens, it inspires dissent and departures. The Beatles famously left Britain, and Bjorn Borg left Sweden, when their governments raised taxes to such high levels that even these national icons departed. Are American lawmakers preparing for that kind of scenario with this new law?Now in America, you can love it, or leave it — but you can’t take it all with you. UFO crushed IN Needles Las Vegas

A large object with a turquoise hue plummeted out of the sky earlier this summer and plowed into the earth south of Las Vegas near Needles, California.Eyewitnesses say this was no meteorite, especially since a bunch of helicopters came looking for it and then hauled it away. The object was seen in the early morning hours of May 14. It appeared to crash into the ground just west of the Colorado River. And that’s when things got interesting for residents of the area.Somewhere in the rough terrain just west of the Colorado River and south of Needles is a point of impact, maybe some burn marks, created by something that fell from the sky. Frank Costigan saw it because he got up at 3 a.m. to let his cat out — a fiery object that flashed across the sky, but it wasn’t a meteor he says.”It was bright, bright enough that it illuminated the ground,” he said. For seven years, Costigan worked as the chief of airport security at L.A.X. He says the mystery object flew out of the north east, heading southwest, traveling very fast, but at one point it slowed down, then sped up again.”It went behind a hill, and I waited to see if I could hear it crash because as big as it was, it was bound to make noise,” he said. But he didn’t hear a crash. Hours later, David Hayes, the owner of KTOX Radio in Needles, was coming to work when he spotted an odd formation of dark vehicles getting off the highway. He drew a picture of the lead vehicle, a large truck with a dome on top and a black structure that reminded him of a stealth fighter.”It seemed like it was some kind of surveillance vehicle — four-wheel drive. It had government plates, U.S. government plates and behind it were a couple of vans that looked like support vehicles,” said Hayes. The men inside had a military bearing, Hayes said, but weren’t in uniform. He made eye contact with one of the drivers and the guy followed him. Later in the day, one of the vehicles was parked outside the station, seemingly conducting a surveillance of the place.”These guys staring you down had a ‘Men in Black’ feel to it?” asks Knapp.”Absolutely. Very serious, serious as a heart attack,” said Hayes.Coincidentally, Costigan, the ex-cop, works on investigations for Hayes. When he came in to the radio station, he told Hayes about the thing he had seen in the sky, and Hayes told him about the Men in Black. Then they got another piece of the puzzle — a call from a man who lives in a houseboat on the river, who said he saw the fiery object — that it had crashed about 100 yards west of the river, that it landed with a thump. Hayes says he’s known the witness for years by the name Bob on the river. Bob thought a plane had crashed and tried to call 911 but his cell wouldn’t work, so he moved his boat out into the river, and then heard the helicopters. In an interview with journalist Linda Howe, Bob says he saw at least five helicopters flying in formation, including a large sky crane. The crane picked up the oval shaped object, still glowing, and flew away, heading in the direction of Las Vegas. One odd detail, the choppers arrived only 17 minutes after the object crashed. He described it to Hayes.”It was about the size of a semi-trailer, he says, oblong shaped thing,” said Hayes.Out of the blue, the station got a call from a friend in Laughlin who said the Laughlin Airport had been inundated on the night of the crash with so-called Janet planes. That’s the airline that flies workers to top secret Area 51. Costigan says the airport could not confirm this because no one is on duty after 6 p.m. at night, not even in the tower. The black vehicles have left Needles. Bob the houseboat guy can’t be found either.”The fact that there were people here the next day, it was almost like they were doing some sort of cleanup or whatever. The point is, something definitely happened. The I-Team phoned nearly every agency we could think of to see if they had received any report or knew anything. We were not surprised to learn that no one knew anything. Here’s the list — police agencies in three states, the Laughlin Airport, the weather service, the FAA and several military bases.A military watchdog group found a public record showing there was at least one army helicopter in the air in that area at that time. The helicopter, oddly enough, is listed as being attached to a U.S. base in Europe. source & references:http://www.lasvegasnow.com/global/Story.asp?s=8750270

Cafferty File: Will Going Negative Help McCain?

From the Cafferty File:Remember when John McCain talked about how he wasn’t going to run a negative campaign? How he wanted to focus on the issues and not get down in the political mud? I guess you can chalk it up to something else McCain has changed his mind about. Now he’s apparently decided that going negative is the way to the White House. You don’t need to look much farther than McCain’s ads, which have become increasingly negative — calling Barack Obama a celebrity, and comparing him to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Or the ad that that says Obama “made time to go to the gym, but cancelled a visit with wounded troops.” One study points out one-third of John McCain’s ads refer to Obama negatively. On the other hand, 90% of Obama’s ads don’t even mention John McCain. These negative ads feed the perception of McCain as an angry candidate. Even some Republicans don’t think this strategy is such a good idea. Former top McCain strategist John Weaver called the celebrity ad “childish” and “tomfoolery”, while other Republicans have called it “unprofessional,” “absurd and juvenile.” An editorial in the St. Petersburg Times says of McCain: “The self-described ‘happy warrior’ from 2000 has turned sour… and the candor and straight talk that once made him such an attractive candidate are rapidly disappearing.”Meanwhile, McCain’s flip-flop on the issue of offshore drilling has netted him some big bucks from the big oil companies. A non-partisan campaign finance watchdog group says that after McCain announced he was changing his position and now was going to support offshore drilling, the Big Oil companies opened their wallets. “Campaign Money Watch” found that in Texas alone, oil-related donors gave $1.2 million to McCain’s Victory ‘08 fund in June — 73% of it coming after his reversal on offshore drilling. Think that’s a coincidence? Here’s my question to you: Is going negative against Barack Obama a winning strategy for John McCain?

Cambodians head to the polls this weekend, however, Human Rights Watch says conditions are not in place for free and fair elections.Hun Sen, Cambodia’s prime minister, is widely expected to retain power. But the watchdog group says his party’s grip on the media, and use of harrassment and intimidation undermine the credibility of the poll.Nationalist sentiment is running high over a border dispute with Thailand. However, many Cambodians also want to see an end to rampant corruption and solutions to rising living costs.Eleven parties are competing, including the new “Human Rights Party”.Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) continues to dominate. He has effectively been in power since the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979. But many of Cambodia’s younger voters may be looking for a change of rule, as Al Jazeera’s Marga Ortigas reports from Phnom Penh.
